Australian National University Symposium

'From Our Side of the Ocean: Australian perspectives on THE CHALLENGES FOR THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IN INDONESIA AND CHINA'

WEDNESDAY, January 21 2009
JOHN JACOB Astor Salon, Waldorf Astoria

*Invitation only

As the administration of President Obama takes office, a moderated panel of senior academics from Australia's top ranked university, The Australian National University (ANU), will discuss the immense opportunities and challenges for the United States of America and Australia accompanying the rise of Asia over the coming decades.

The session offers a distinctively Australian perspective on two countries that will demand the attention of the new Administration:

  • Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, is building the world’s third-largest democracy. The panel will look at the resulting interplay of politics, Islam, and Indonesian society and explore the United States’ stake in the outcome.
  • China, the world’s largest country, may be on track to become the world’s largest economy: Will it happen? What will it mean for Asia’s political and strategic order? And how might the United States respond?
